Kota: Incidents of teenaged students preparing to crack extremely tough Engineering entrance exams colleges committing suicide are not rare. Most of such self-destructive acts are triggered by extreme pressure and the fear of failure.
The latest case, that of a 17-year-old IIT aspirant who had enrolled in one of the coaching institutes at Kota, is even more tragic as he took his life on Tuesday when his parents had gone to visit him.
According to police, the boys’ parents travelled from Maharashtra to meet him in Kota. After breakfast today, the parents had gone out. They returned to discover that their son had committed suicide.
The teenager – who was in Kota for two months — was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police have launched an investigation into the boy’s suicide. They will look at all angles, including whether the parents were putting pressure on him to excel.
In view of the continued cases of students’ suicide in Kota, the Rajasthan government plans to introduce a law to regulate coaching centres.
Among the proposals of the state government is to take an aptitude test of students to see if they are prepared for medical and engineering exams before enrolling at Kota’s coaching centres.
