New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in the Lok Sabha on Thursday coincided with the formal closure of a fractious Monsoon Session that had been paralysed for days by Opposition protests over student agitation and other flashpoints.
Within minutes of members standing for the national song Vande Mataram, Speaker Om Birla declared the House adjourned sine die, bringing the session to an early end without further debate.
The day’s proceedings opened with Speaker Om Birla calling on members to rise for Vande Mataram. With the Prime Minister and Home Minister Amit Shah in the House, the recitation was followed almost immediately by the Speaker’s announcement that the Lok Sabha was being adjourned sine die, ending weeks of deadlock, as reported by Mint.
Earlier, Opposition MPs had staged a protest at Makar Dwar before the scheduled 11 am start, extending a pattern of disruptions that had defined much of the session.
Weeks Of Deadlock Over Student Protests
The Monsoon Session, which began on July 20, was repeatedly interrupted as Opposition parties pressed for discussions on alleged police action against student protesters at Jantar Mantar, the Ayodhya Ram Mandir donation row, and other contentious matters.
Opposition leaders had also sought a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on reported police excesses during the 20 July protest at Jantar Mantar, a demand that went unmet as the session collapsed into impasse.
On Wednesday, Parliament cleared the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, renaming the state “Keralam,” and the NCDC Amendment Bill, 2026, expanding the corporation’s mandate to fund cooperative development more directly. Both measures were passed by voice vote amid Opposition protests and without debate.
‘Shuddhikaran’ Row Dominates Rajya Sabha
In the Upper House, proceedings were overshadowed by a sharp exchange over a “shuddhikaran” (purification) ceremony held at Ramlila Ground in Haldwani after a rally addressed by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge on 8 August.
