Age Caps & 2-Term Limits: Inside DMK’s Big Overhaul, Post Electoral Defeat

Chennai: The DMK, still smarting from an unexpected defeat at the hands of Joseph Vijay-helmed poll debutants TVK, on Saturday unveiled a structural overhaul in the party’s organisation.

DMK president MK Stalin announced introduction of age limits and two-term caps for a number of key posts, in a significant departure from its traditional way of functioning.

The reforms, aimed at bringing “new blood” into the organisation, were approved at the DMK Executive Committee meeting in Chennai.

The New Rules

* The maximum age for a branch party secretary has been set at 45 years. Municipal, city and town panchayat ward committee secretaries must not be older than 50.

* Age limit for secretaries of town panchayat, area committee and city committee has been fixed at 60.

* For district party secretaries, the age ceiling has been fixed at 70 years.

* Those elected to these positions will be allowed to serve a maximum of two terms each.

DMK has also revised the structure of some local organisational units.

In the Greater Chennai Corporation, each area committee will cover an average of 40,000 voters. In other municipal corporations, it will be 30,000 voters.

City committees will comprise an average of 40,000 voters.
