Bargarh: A farmer, who was staging a demonstration before Bargarh Collector’s office, attempted suicide by consuming poison on Thursday morning.
The victim, identified as Akura Bisi, was rescued by other farmers and immediately rushed to the district headquarters hospital in a critical condition.
“The farmer took the extreme step as the district officials failed to hold a discussion on compensation for crop loss due to Nor’wester rain in the district. Akur was under severe stress as the unseasonal rain destroyed his crop which he had raised by taking loans,” said a political party leader, who was also accompanying the protesting farmers.
Crying apathy, the agitators said no one from the district administration has so far visited the hospitalised farmer or enquired about his health condition.
