Ahead Of Festive Season, Central Govt Raises Minimum Wages For Farm, Industrial Workers

New Delhi: There’s good news for agricultural and industrial workers ahead of the festive season.

The Union government on Thursday raised central minimum wages for workers in various sectors, linked to skill levels and sector types. The hike is to account for rise in prices, according to a notification from the Central Labour Commissioner.

Under the provisions of Minimum Wages Act, 1948, both Central and state governments are empowered to fix, review and revise floor wages of workers employed in sectors that fall under their jurisdictions.

However, the Central government’s hike in minimum wages will benefit those working in building construction, loading and unloading, security guards, janitors, housekeeping, mining and agriculture.

After the enhanced wages come into effect from October 1, 2024, minimum wage rates for workers in construction, sweeping, cleaning, loading & unloading for unskilled work will be Rs 783 per day or Rs 20,358 a month, whichever is higher, the notification said.

For semi-skilled workers, the rate will be Rs 868 a day or Rs 22,568 per month and for skilled, clerical and watch and wards without arms, it has been increased to Rs 954 a day or Rs 24,804 per month.

For highly skilled and watch and ward with arms, floor wage will be Rs 1,035 a day or Rs 26,910 per month.

The Centre last enhanced minimum wage in April.
