New Delhi: It’s official! India will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and Ahmedabad has officially been named the host city for the Centenary edition of the Games.
This was approved at the 2025 Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow. The 2030 Games will mark 100 years since the inaugural event in Hamilton, Canada.
In October, Ahmedabad had been recommended after an evaluation of the candidate cities. The other bidder was Abuja in Nigeria. The 74-member General Assembly voted for Ahmedabad. Nigeria will be the host for the 2034 edition of the games.
The last time India had hosted the Commonwealth Games was in 2010. The process following the recommendation was overseen by Commonwealth Sport’s Evaluation Committee.
“India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance…We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health,” said Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport.
Ahmedabad has been hosting several sporting events over the last few months. These include the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, the Asian Aquatics Championships and football’s AFC Under-17 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers.
It will be hosting the Asian Weightlifting Championship, and Asia Para-Archery Cup. In 2029, the World Po
lice and Fire Games will be held in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, one of the key venues under development, will feature the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, which has a capacity of over one lakh, alongside a new aquatics centre, a football stadium, and two indoor sports arenas. The complex will also include an athletes’ village capable of accommodating 3,000 participants.
“We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century,” P T Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India and the IOA, said.
“It will bring together athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress,” she added.
Commonwealth Sport has also confirmed that the 2030 Games will feature 15 to 17 sports.
Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball and Boxing are the confirmed disciplines.
