Bhubaneswar: Advanced AI-enabled surveillance cameras are going to installed in prisons across Odisha to strengthen security and prevent jailbreaks.
As per information, the prisons directorate has decided to install sophisticated cameras to detect unusual activities, including attempts to scale the boundary walls of jails. In case of any such activities, the surveillance system will trigger an immediate siren alert to put the security personnel in action.
It may be noted that Odisha operates 87 jails with a total capacity for 24,196 inmates, housing around 17,000 prisoners at present.
“While all jails are armed with CCTV surveillance, we lack adequate manpower to monitor the footage round-the-clock. We will soon go for a significant technological upgrade to enhance security measures within the correctional facilities. AI cameras will be put in place to detect suspicious activities and raise alarms,” TOI quoted Director General (Prisons) Susanta Kumar Nath as saying.
Therefore, AI-powered advanced cameras will be installed in prisons to monitor the movements of inmates. The AI technology will analyse real-time footage, identifying suspicious movements and behaviours that deviate from normal patterns.
The move comes in the wake of three separate incidents of inmates escaping from different jails in the state during the last month, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current security protocols.
It may be recalled that an undertrial prisoner, accused of attempting to kill his mother in Sundargarh district, escaped from a special jail in Rourkela on September 17 by jumping from an unoccupied watchtower. His body was found about 1km from the jail the next day.
Two undertrial prisoners from Bihar, accused of killing two men during an attempted robbery at a jewellery shop in Jajpur district in January escaped from Choudwar circle jail in Cuttack on October 3. They are still at large.
On October 21, a theft accused from Dhanbad in Jharkhand escaped from Soro sub-jail in Balasore district by scaling the wall using a blanket.
