AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Issues Statement On Odisha’s First COVID-19 Deceased

Bhubaneswar: Odisha reported its first coronavirus death on Tuesday. While the 72-year-old man died at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar on Monday, the Health and Family Welfare Department confirmed it to be a case of coronavirus on Tuesday.

In the evening, the AIIMS-Bhubaneswar issued a statement on it.

According to the statement, the septuagenarian was admitted to the hospital at 1 pm on April 4 with fever and severe respiratory difficulty.

He was immediately shifted to the isolation ward since he had symptoms of a suspected case of COVID-19 and treated for respiratory failure with oxygen and supporting therapy.

“His condition worsened and he was put on ventilator on April 6 but despite all medical care, he passed away,” it said.

It further said that his samples were taken on April 6 and found to be positive for COVID-19 infection during tests at AllMS-Bhubaneswar. It was subsequently sent to RMRC for re-confirmation and the result received on April 7 was also found to be positive.

“As the patient was treated as a COVID 19 suspect from the very beginning, all hospital infection control and safety protocols were followed,” the statement said.

The previous patient from Surya Nagar, who was COVID 19 positive and on
ventilator support, is stable and improving though not out of danger, it added.
