AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Performs Rare Surgery To Remove 7-kg Tumour From Scalp Of 51-Yr-Old Patient

Bhubaneswar: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Bhubaneswar successfully conducted a rare surgery to remove a 7-kg tumour from the scalp of a patient recently.

The patient, 51-year-old Rabindra Bishui from West Bengal, was suffering from scalp swelling for more than two decades. Later, it was diagnosed as a Synovial Sarcoma tumour, a rare tumour that appears on the scalp. It was difficult to cure with conventional treatment methods.

According to AIIMS, the procedure was intricate and lasted for seven hours, necessitating the ligation of the left external carotid artery and posterolateral neck dissection. It involved precise embolisation of blood vessels, targeting the bilateral superficial temporal arteries and the left occipital artery.

The surgery, which was second of its kind in India, was possible because of collaborative effort of specialists from different departments, AIIMS sources said.

“The patient went to different medical colleges and hospitals for treatment before visiting the department of Plastic Surgery at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. A multidisciplinary team from the hospital, comprising experts in interventional radiology, surgical oncology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, anaesthesiology and pathology, prepared a treatment strategy for the patient under the guidance of Dr Sanjay Kumar Giri, Head of the department of Burns and Plastic Surgery,” said Dr Ashutosh Biswas, executive director of the institute.
