Bhubaneswar: A second-year MBBS student of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, was found hanging in his hotel room on Tuesday, the institution informed on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old student hailed from Dibrugarh in Assam. He had returned from his hometown along with his father on December 23.
They had dinner at night, following which his father stayed in a hotel. “His father mentioned that he received a call from his son on Tuesday morning, and they planned to visit Jagannath Temple, Puri,” the AIIMS-Bhubaneswar said in a statement.
The student, however, didn’t respond to his multiple telephone calls thereafter. The father later learnt about a distress audio message sent by the victim to his younger son in Assam, in which he suggested not selling the land and advised him to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor by staying there, and rushed to the hostel.
The door of the hostel room was locked from inside. The father, along with some students, broke the door and found him hanging from the ceiling fan at around 10.30 am. Subsequent attempts to revive him through CPR and other lifesaving measures at the Emergency failed and he was declared dead.
On being informed, police reached the institution and recovered a suicide note purportedly written by the student. “The student wrote in the letter that nobody was responsible for his death. He expressed his frustration over his life. We are investigating the case after registering an unnatural death case,” IIC of Khandagiri police station Abhimanyu Das told TOI.
This incident came a week after a 70-year-old patient died by suicide in the orthopaedic ward at the premier health facility.
