AIIMS Bhubaneswar Successfully Conducts Its First Liver Transplant



Bhubaneswar: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar has conducted its first liver transplant, marking a milestone moment in advanced surgery.

A team of over 50 medical staff including surgeons completed the transplant in 14 hours at the premier hospital on December 20. A 37-year-old recipient was transplanted with a portion of liver donated by his 30-year-old younger brother, both of whom hail from Pipili in Puri district. Both the donor and recipient have been discharged from the hospital after recovering well.

Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar Dr Ashutosh Biswas congratulated the entire transplant team and reiterated the commitment of providing innovative procedures and services to the people of Odisha.

The liver transplant surgery was performed by the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, led by Dr Brahmadatta Pattanaik (Head – GI & Liver Transplant Surgery) along with Dr Tanmay Datta and Dr Sunita Gupta, under the guidance of Prof. Vinayendra Pamecha (Head of Liver Transplant Surgery, ILBS, New Delhi), his expert team and Dr Subrat Kumar Sahoo (pediatric liver transplant surgeon). nts of Paediatric Surgery, Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Radiology and Gastroenterology along with the Medical Superitendent, Blood Bank, nurses among the staff that contributed to this groundbreaking feat. The liver transplant recipient and near-related donor were discharged after recovering well.

The Liver Transplant Programme at AIIMS Bhubaneswar was conceptualized in 2023 and received the official license to initiate operations the same year. The Liver Transplant Outpatient Department (OPD) became operational on 21st February 2025. A 10-bedded, highly sophisticated transplant Intensive Care Unit (ICU) became fully operational since November this year. The programme is supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team, comprising liver transplant and GI surgery specialists, gastroenterologists, pediatric surgeons, transplant coordinators, counsellors, nutritionists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, blood bank specialists, and critical care experts.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar entered into a MoU with the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, the country’s premier public sector institute dedicated exclusively to liver and biliary diseases.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar is witnessing a steadily increasing waiting list of liver transplant patients, not only from Odisha but also from neighbouring states. The Liver Transplant OPD is held every Tuesday from 2:30 pm onwards, and over 200 patients have already availed OPD services this year. The programme underscores AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s unwavering commitment to providing world-class, comprehensive healthcare to the region.
