Patnagarh: In a bizarre incident at Bharatbahal near here, a man axed his wife on Saturday evening for a rabbit she was fond of.

Purandar Naik came back home drunk, as usual after Sunset Saturday. He insisted that he would have rabbit’s meat for dinner. His wife Ambika Naik, however, vehemently refused to kill the rabbit for her husband as she fondly loved the animal.

According to sources, the couple fought over the issue after Purandar hacked the rabbit. Subsequently, Purandar allegedly hit his wife with an axe in a fit of anger. She collapsed on the spot as the she bled profusely and died instantaneously.

Ambika’s mother Jayanti Thakur has reported the incident to the police. Larambha police have reached the spot along with scientific clues team and Patnagarh Sub-divisional Magistrate Kshirod Sahu.

However, Purandar managed to flee his village soon after he came down to his senses. Investigations are underway, suggested the magistrate.

According to Jayanti Thakur, when she reached her daughter’s house, Ambika had died and Purandar was away. She said the couple fought only when Purandar came home drunk.
