Dhaka: All flights were suspended at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday after a major fire broke out at the cargo terminal.

Large-scale emergency response measures were put in place after the blaze was noticed near Gate 8 at around 3 pm.

People in and around the airport panicked and screamed on seeing thick, dense smoke plumes going up into the air, which was visible from a long distance.

According to Fire Service spokesman Talha Bin Jashim, 10 firefighting units were immediately dispatched to the scene, and 15 additional units were on the way. Jashim later confirmed that 36 units were in operation to control the flames.

Airport official Masudul Hasan said that all operations were postponed for some hours, but all planes were safe.

There was no report of any casualty or any significant damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

It’s the third fire in Bangladesh this week. A chemical warehouse blaze on Tuesday claimed 16 lives, and another fire destroyed a garment factory building in an export processing zone in Chittagong.
