New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to entertain the bail petition of conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar’s wife Leena Paulose in the Rs 200-crore extortion case as the allegations against her are ‘serious’.
Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi said on Monday that there was no change of circumstances since the bail plea was last rejected by Delhi High Court, reported PTI.
“The allegations are fairly serious. Sorry. We have taken the decision. The high court has already examined the matter,” the two-judge bench said.
Senior advocate R Basant, who appeared for Paulose, withdrew the bail petition and the matter was dismissed as withdrawn.
Delhi High Court dismissed Paulose’s bail plea on July 11, saying the probe has revealed that the couple – Paulose and Sukesh — acted in tandem in running the organised crime syndicate and used proceeds of crime for promoting their business and personal interests like air travel and purchase of high-end branded gifts for Bollywood celebrities.
Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Chandrashekhar for allegedly duping wives of former Ranbaxy promoters Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh of Rs 200 crore with the promise of securing bail for their husbands.
Chandrashekhar has been accused of impersonating a Union Law Ministry official to cheat the two women.
Chandrashekar and Paulose, who along with two others, were arrested by Delhi Police in the extortion case. The couple is also facing proceedings in a money-laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate.
Paulose, who acted in a few films including Shoojit Sircar’s 2013 political action thriller ‘Madras Cafe’, had applied for bail claiming that she complied with several demands and suggestions of her husband in good faith and as a dutiful wife without understanding consequences.
She had submitted that most of the offences for which she has been booked are bailable and claimed she has no direct connection with crimes committed by her husband.
