Hyderabad: With an eye on expanding its presence and speed up deliveries in India, Amazon on Monday launched its air freight service in the country.
This is the third market, after Europe and the US, that Amazon Air has been started.
K T Rama Rao, Telangana’s minister for Municipal Administration & Urban Development, Industry & Commerce, launched Amazon Air here.
Launched in Seattle in 2016, Amazon Air has uses 110 cargo jets to deliver goods across 70 destinations.
In India, the E-commerce giant has tied up with Quikjet Cargo Airline Private Ltd, a Bengaluru-based freight carrier, which will fly a Boeing 737-800 jet to transport shipments cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai to start with.
The company said that the launch of Amazon Air services will support 1.1 million sellers across the country.
Amazon has reportedly invested over $6.5 billion in India to kick off the Amazon Air freight services.
“First ever e-commerce company to have its dedicated air cargo network in India. Telangana becomes the obvious destination for #Amazon to launch Amazon Air outside NA & Europe,” tweeted Y Sathish Reddy, Chairman, Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation.
