Jajpur: An ambulance driver allegedly abandoned the body of a woman on the national highway near Nolia bridge at Chhatia in Odisha’s Jajpur district after the husband expressed his inability to pay Rs 5,000.
According to sources, Chhabi Mishra (40), wife of Hemant Mishra of Bhuban in Dhenkanal district, was admitted to Badachana Community Health Centre in Jajpur district on May 13. She was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after her condition deteriorated but died while undergoing treatment there.
Hemant, a daily wager, arranged an ambulance and was returning home with the body late in the night when the driver demanded Rs 5,000. He gave the driver Rs 3,000 and expressed his inability to pay the rest amount. An infuriated ambulance driver then left the place leaving the body on National Highway at Chhatia.
Locals informed the beat house officials about the body, following which police reached the spot and questioned Hemant, who stood guard near the body all night. He then performed the last rites of his wife with the help of local residents this morning.
