Mumbai: While fans are celebrating Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, the actor has already begun looking ahead to the future of the franchise.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland revealed that Marvel Studios has already mapped out a long-term plan for the day he eventually steps away from the iconic superhero role.
The actor shared that discussions about his eventual departure began soon after the release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021), with Marvel already laying the groundwork for the next chapter of the franchise.
“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting,” Holland said.
He added that thinking about the character’s future is one of the aspects he enjoys the most.
“I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure,” he said.
Holland first appeared as Spider-Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016) before going on to headline multiple Spider-Man films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is the third actor to portray Peter Parker on the big screen, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Reflecting on his own journey, Holland said he would be more than happy to mentor the next actor to don the Spider-Man suit, just as Robert Downey Jr. supported him during his early years in the MCU.
“In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next,” Holland told Esquire earlier this year.
When asked who he would like to see succeed him as Spider-Man, Holland named Owen Cooper, the teenage actor who earned widespread acclaim for his performance in Netflix’s Adolescence.
