New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that Supreme Court’s verdict on Rath Yatra made the day special for all and the entire nation is delighted by the decision.
“Considering the urgency and importance of the matter, it was placed in front of a vacation bench of the Supreme Court and the hearing took place this afternoon, paving the way for the important decision,” he said.
A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde modified its June 18 order, staying Rath Yatra in view of COVID-19 pandemic, after the Centre and the state government assured it that the annual event, scheduled for June 23, can be conducted in a restricted manner without devotees.
In a series of tweets, Shah hailed the decision of the apex court. “It makes me, as well as crores of devotees across India happy that PM Narendra Modi not only understood the sentiment of the devotees but also initiated consultations which ensured that the great traditions of our land are observed,” he wrote.
Earlier, he spoke to Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingha Deb, the king of Puri, and the Shankaracharya and sought their views on the festival after being directed by the PM.
