Ammonia Gas Leak In Tamil Nadu Claims Lives Of 2 Odisha Women; CM Majhi Assures Support



Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on Sunday expressed deep grief over the deaths of migrant workers, including two women from Odisha, in an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district.

At least seven migrant workers were killed and 67 others affected in the tragic incident. The deceased from Odisha have been identified as 19-year-old Jumani Juwang and Malothi, daughter of Biro, according to media reports quoting the Tiruvallur District Collectorate’s Public Relations Office.

elt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured Odia labourers a speedy recovery. “The Odisha government is in constant touch with the Tamil Nadu administration to ensure all possible assistance is provided to the affected workers. Following directives from the Chief Minister, Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg held discussions with her Tamil Nadu counterpart regarding proper medical treatment and comprehensive support for the Odia labourers,” a CMO release said.

To ensure seamless coordination on the ground and extend all necessary help to the affected workers and their families, a team of three senior officials has already left for Tiruvallur, it added.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh to the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Vijay has also constituted a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The panel has been asked to submit an interim report within 24 hours and a detailed report within three days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences. “Deeply pained to hear about the loss of lives due to a mishap in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the PMO posted on X.
