New Delhi: In yet another setback for Congress, former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s grandson Vibhakar Shastri joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.
He joined the saffron party in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.
An hour before joining BJP, Vibhakar wrote on X, “Hon’ble Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge. Respected Sir, I hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of Indian National Congress,”
Talking to media later, he said he would be able to serve his grandfather’s dream of ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Vibhakar has unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha polls in the past. He is the son of Hari Krishna Shastri, who was a minister at the Centre.
This came a days after former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan joined the saffron party after resigning from Congress.
Milind Deora, Baba Siddiqui, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasad, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Sushmita Dev, RPN Singh, Jaiveer Shergill, among other, had earlier deserted the grand old party.
