Cuttack: Following the arrest of Mohammed Sakil’s two girlfriends for allegedly running an extortion racket on proxy, the Commissionerate Police has written to Choudwar Circle Jail authority to keep a close watch on people visiting him in the jail.
“To curb the crime network operating from the jail premises, we have written to jail authorities to keep a close watch on the person visiting him and other criminals at the jail,” DCP Akhilesvar Singh was quoted as saying by the New Indian Express.
The interrogation of his two girlfriends had shed light on the growing crime syndicate of the dreaded criminal, who formed his own gang after the the arrest of Dhala Samanta bothers. Since then, the 28-year-old gangster had allegedly been reviving extortion and organised crimes in the city.
Another girlfriend of Sakil is under police scanner now, sources said.
The gangster was arrested by a special squad from Andhra Pradesh on June 26, 2017. However, he continued to operate his crime network from behind the bars through his aides.
His girlfriends had recently demanded Rs 10 lakh from a city-based businessman as ‘Dada Bati’. They also used to provide him cellphones and preparing blueprints for several criminal activities, the sources added.
While one among them is a law student, the other is a a trainee air hostess. They were nabbed from Choudwar. and Darga Bazaar, Cuttack.
Both the women have been booked under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 387(extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of the IPC and under Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
The gangster had also allegedly threatened a Cuttack businessman over WhatsApp video call on December 14 and had demanded Rs 10 lakh from him. And the call was facilitated by these two women.
On the complaint of the businessman, police had arrested his father and four of his accomplices on December 31.
