Bhubaneswar: Another accused was arrested by the police on Wednesday in connection with the death of a woman after a chain-snatching incident near in Bhubaneswar on November 13.
The accused, identified as Bidhata from Jharkhand, was arrested from Barbil in Keonjhar district. He is stated to be a notorious criminal with a bullet still embedded in his body.
Police said six special teams were formed to nab Bidhata, who is stated to be the prime accused in the series of chain-snatching incidents in Bhubaneswar and other places.
Further investigation is in progress to ascertain his involvement in other crimes in the state.
Notably, the Airfield Police had earlier arrested one accused involved in the incident after examining around 400 CCTV cameras in Bhubaneswar. He has been identified as Raju Naidu (26) of Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district.
Both the accused were staying in Bhubaneswar. They were reported to be lift mechanics.
The Commissionerate Police had examined over 400 CCTV camera footage to track down the suspects involved in the crime.
The stolen gold chain, along with the clothes worn by the suspect during the theft and the motorbike used for the escape, have been recovered by the police.
The incident had taken place when U Bishnu Patra was travelling with her husband on a bike as a pillion rider from Bhubaneswar to a temple in Harirajpur. The accused persons attempted to loot the gold chain. In the bid, Patra fell down from the bike and later succumbed to fatal head injuries.
