Another Low Pressure Over Bay To Trigger Heavy Rain In Odisha; Check Forecast

Bhubaneswar: Odisha can look forward to some relief from the sultry weather conditions with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal this week.

South West monsoon has become weak in the state with the westerly wind prevailing over eastern India.

In its extended range outlook, the weather agency said a low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest, adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and coastal areas around Tuesday (July 4). Along with offshore troughs, the low-pressure area is likely to cause active monsoon conditions over the country. The models suggest subsequent west-northwestwards movement of the system over the land without further intensification.

According to Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at some places in the state from Tuesday onwards. There is a forecast for heavy rainfall at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi districts on June 3.

Yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nawarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Gajapati and Ganjam on June 4, while One or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Balangir and Nuapada districts may experience intense spells in subsequent 24 hours.

The SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) also said that the state’s coastal and southern region could experience heavy rains from July 3 with the likely formation of a cyclonic circulation over west central and adjoining north west Bay of Bengal. “Models indicate the possibility of the cyclonic circulation leading to the formation of a low pressure area along south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coast on July 4,” a CEC release said on Saturday.

It may cause moderate to heavy rainfall in the districts of coastal and south Odisha between July 3 to 5 while interior districts might get moderate to heavy precipitation on July 5.

The release further said that there is a probability of another cyclonic circulation over north west Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas on July 9 which might subsequently cause the formation of another low pressure area on July 10 or 11. The rainfall intensity would further increase in north and interior Odisha from July 9, it added.
