Istanbul: Two weeks after major tremors killed more than 47,000 people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, Turkey’s southeastern Hatay province experienced a pair of earthquakes, measuring 6.4 and 5.8 in magnitude, on Monday.
Three people were killed and more than 200 injured, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said in a televised statement. He also advised people to stay away from damaged buildings. At least six people were injured in Syria, AP reported.
This came amid a major rescue and search operation in two provinces to save the lives of victims under the rubble of buildings.
Meanwhile, the death count from the quakes two weeks ago has gone up to 41,156 in Turkey, AFAD said on Monday, and it is expected to climb further since people in 385,000 destroyed or seriously damaged apartments are still missing.
