Nagpur: Rape cases in India are showing no signs of diminishing. In the latest incident, the plight of a 22-year-old woman has to be read to be believed.

The young Nepalese woman, who had come to India in 2018 after getting a job, recently travelled over 800 km from Lucknow to file a rape case in Nagpur, Maharashtra police said on Monday.

The accused man warned the lady against reporting the alleged offence — that took place in Lucknow – to police. The woman, determined to bring the man to book, fled from the Uttar Pradesh capital and managed to reach Nagpur.

A friend in Nagpur helped her lodged a zero-First information Report (FIR), which can be filed in any police station in the country and later transferred to the appropriate police station with competent jurisdiction.

A senior police inspector from Nagpur’s Koradi police station told PTI that the woman had been staying with a lady friend in the latter’s rented flat in Lucknow since March this year. The friend introduced her to the accused, Lucknow native Pravin Rajpal Yadav —  who worked as software engineer in Dubai – through a video call.

The victim told police that she had kept Rs 1.5 lakh with her lady friend but when she asked for it, the latter did not return the money and started beating and harassing her. The victim complained about this to Yadav, who asked the Nepalese woman to shift to a hotel in Lucknow.

The accused came to Lucknow from Dubai a few days later and met the victim at the hotel, where he allegedly drugged and raped her.

The accused, who shot objectionable photographs and videos of the victim, allegedly raped her again after taking her to a friend’s place in Lucknow. He uploaded the victim’s photos on social media accounts and threatened to make them viral if she approached police.

The Nepalese woman then decided to flee Lucknow and lodged a complaint in Nagpur against Yadav and the victim’s female friend.

The victim left Nagpur with a police team on Sunday night left for registration of the case with Chinhat police in Lucknow, the official said.
