Bhubaneswar: In another self-immolation attempt in the city, a woman along with her son tried to set themselves on fire on Saturday in protest against police inaction over murder of her another son.

The incident took place at about 12 pm when the woman, Sulochana Das and her son Subrat tried to pour kerosene on themselves for self-immolation near the Idcol Bhawan behind the State Assembly. However, they were rescued by some women.

Following information, police rushed to the spot and took them to the Capital Hospital for medical examination.

Talking to mediapersons, Sulochana alleged that her son Amruta Das, an engineer working in Paradip, was murdered by a group of 10-12 miscreants at the Balipatna Chhak in Tirtol on July 20 last year. Following the incident, she lodged a complaint with the police naming Arun Patnaik, son of retired Army personnel Basant Nayak, and his associates as the prime accused.

She said though she had requested the Jagatsinghpur SP for a thorough probe into the incident, police registered an unnatural death case. Later, the Sadar SDPO submitted a final report stating that the death of her son was due to a road accident.

“Not satisfied by the report of the DSP, I met the SP who scolded me saying that the death of my son was due to the accident. Later, I moved the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC). On the order of the court, police registered a murder case under Section 302 of the IPC,” she added.

The hapless mother also said though she raised her grievances in the Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell, there is no response till date. “As I did not get justice for my son, there is no need for me to lead a wretched life,” she added.

On Tuesday, the parents of five-year-old girl Pari attempted to immolate themselves outside the Odisha Legislative Assembly demanding justice for their daughter who was murdered. Alleging police inaction in the case, the couple accused minister Arun Sahoo of shielding prime accused and his close aide Babuli Nayak.
