Apollo Hospital In Bhubaneswar Conducts 3 Rare Gastrointestinal Surgeries

Bhubaneswar: The Apollo Hospital in the city has successfully cured three patients of  varied gastrointestinal problems through unique modality of treatment in six months.

A highly experienced team of doctors, led by Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist and hepatologist Dr Susant Kumar Sethi, including Cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Dr Debasis Nayak and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon Dr Suryakant Pradhan managed these patients successfully by combined endoscopic and surgical modalities.

According to Apollo Hospital sources, one of the patients had a perforation in his food pipe after he swallowed a chicken bone, which led to a severe chest infection with pus collection in chest cavity leading to a life threatening condition. Dr SK Sethi of the hospital used endoscopy to diagnose and treat the perforation by deploying a specialised stent in food pipe to seal the perforation. Dr D Nayak performed a surgery to treat the chest infection and pus collection. After 2 months of treatment, the patient made complete recovery and is able to eat and lead a normal life.

In the second case, a lady had swallowed her own denture, which got stuck in food pipe and led to multiple perforations in her food pipe. According to Dr Sethi, it was nearly impossible to remove the denture from food pipe and close the defect using endoscopic method.

A team consisting of Dr Sethi, surgeons Dr Suryakant Pradhan (ENT), Dr Salil Parida (GI surgery) and anaesthetists Dr Sidharth Mohanty, Dr Saumitra Sathpathy and Dr Jyoti Pati enabled endoscopic removal of denture and closure of the food pipe perforation by placement of a stent. After 3 to 4 weeks, she was cured and discharged.

The third patient was suffering from severe form of COVID-19 pneumonia and was on long term ventilatory support. Once he was taken off the ventilator, it was found that he had developed an abnormal communication between his food pipe and airway (trachea).

Dr D Nayak along with Dr Sethi and Dr Suryankant Pradhan performed endoscopic clipping of the opening in food pipe, suturing of the trachea and ligation of the fistula (abnormal communication). After 3 months of treatment, the patient was saved from a major surgery and is able to eat by self and doing relatively well.
