Balangir: Police arrested a Jawan of the Indian Army for allegedly murdering a woman after her family rejected his marriage proposal over dowry demand in the district on Sunday.
According to sources, Jawan Santosh Sahu of Berhampur and Suryakanti Sahu of Bhawanipatna developed a relationship following friendship on Facebook. It led to their marriage proposal by the two families.
However, before the marriage could be confirmed, the family of Santosh demanded a dowry of Rs 30 lakh. But, Surykanti’s family expressed inability to meet the demand and rejected the marriage proposal.
Later, Santosh took Suryakanti on some plea to a school near Sindheikela in Balangir district, murdered her and threw the body in a paddy field in December last year. As Suryakanti did not return home, her father registered a missing complaint with police.
A few days after the incident, the locals found the body of Suryakanti and informed the police who identified it.
The police arrested Santosh on the basis of the complaint filed by Suryakanti’s father and forwarded to the court.
