Bhubaneswar: A total of 21,948 birds were spotted at Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary near the city during a census carried out on Saturday.
Of them, 27 species were migratory birds. Of the local varieties, there were 62 species of aquatic birds and 17 other species.
The bird census was started from 5 am to 5 pm on Saturday. As many as 21 teams were engaged at 27 different places for the survey. These included Haladia, Dampada and Chandaka in Chandaka division, and some other places under Bhubaneswar Range.
Forest Department employees, wardens, research scholars from Utkal University, Centurion University, SOA. North Odisha University, Central University, and OUAT, social workers, and bird lovers participated in the bird counting.
Last year, 16,013 birds were spotted.
