Bhubaneswar: Even as curfew was imposed in Odisha’s Sambalpur following fresh violence, Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Bansal on Saturday said action will be taken against those involved in arson.

Stating that the situation in the western Odisha city is now under control, Bansal said additional police force had been deployed in the city in view of fresh violence and the prevailing tension in several parts of Sambalpur.

Senior police officers have also been mobilised to monitor the situation constantly and take necessary steps to restore normalcy in the city, he said. The police officials are keeping a close watch on the situation in an effort to restore normalcy and prevent any fresh trouble.

After thorough analysis of the situation, a decision on action against trouble-makers will be taken, the DGP said. While action will be taken against those involved in arson, those instigating violence will also be taken to task.

Following fresh violence on Friday, the district administration of Sambalpur imposed curfew in many parts of the city while the ban on internet services was extended for two more days on Saturday.

As tension prevailed in city which was rocked by fresh violence, curfew was claimed for an indefinite period in many areas under the jurisdiction of six police stations as a precautionary measure. The district authorities imposed curfew curbs in a bit to ensure peace and tranquility in areas under Town Police Station, Dhanupali Police Station, Khetrajpur PS, Ainthapali PS, Bareipali PS and Sadar Police Station of Sambalpur.

It may be noted here that the western Odisha city witnessed widespread violence and a clash between two groups during a rally on Wednesday ahead of Hanuman Janmotsav. While at least ten policemen sustained injuries, several vehicles were allegedly damaged and some shops were set on fire.
