Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Monday apprehended Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police of Jajpur Town, Nanda Kishore Das, while allegedly accepting Rs 5,000 bribe.
According to a Vigilance release, the ASI had demanded illegal gratification from a beetle shop owner to help him in a land dispute-related case in which he was the investigating officer.
Earlier, the beetle shop owner had moved the Orissa High Court for demarcation of his land. Following which, the authority concer
ned demarcated the land as per the court orders. “But the neighbour of the shop owner with whom he had a dispute, allegedly demolished the boundary wall constructed by him. The shop owner approached the Jajpur Town police station over the matter. The ASI visited the spot but demanded a bribe of Rs.10,000 to help him in the case,” the release said.
The ASI reduced it to Rs 5,000 when he expressed his inability to pay the amount.
The beetle shop owner, however, reported the matter to Vigilance authorities, who laid a trap and nabbed the police officer while taking Rs 5,000. The entire bribe money was recovered from him and seized.
While a case has been registered against the ASI under Section 7 of PC Amendment) Act, 2018, simultaneous searches are being conducted at three places to ascertain whether he has accumulated assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, it added.
