New Delhi: Asian Games gold medal-winning former boxer Dingko Singh succumbed to liver cancer at his home at Sekta in Manipur’s East Imphal district on Thursday morning. He was 42 and had been fighting the disease since 2017.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to condole the sportsman’s death. “Shri Dingko Singh was a sporting superstar, an outstanding boxer who earned several laurels and also contributed to furthering the popularity of boxing. Saddened by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the PM tweeted.
Dingko won the gold in the 1998 Asian Games held in Bangkok. He was bestowed the Arjuna award the same year. In 2013, he was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the sport, NDTV reported.
Dingko, who was employed with Navy, had taken to coaching after hanging up his gloves.
