Assam-Mizoram Dispute: Neutral Central Force To Be Deployed Along Disturbed Border

Amid the border tension between Assam and Mizoram, it was decided on Wednesday that a neutral central force will be deployed along the disturbed border following a meeting convened by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The meeting, which lasted two hours, was chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and attended by Assam and Mizoram’s chief secretaries Jishnu Baruah and Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, and director generals of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and SBK Singh, respectively.

According to the ‘agreement’, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel will be deployed at the disturbed inter-state border along National Highway 306, PTI quoted an MHA official said as saying.

A senior CAPF officer will command the neutral force.

Border dispute between Assam and Mizoram is not a new development. In the latest flashpoint, at least six people died and over 50 injured.

Both state governments will coordinate with MHA to facilitate proper functioning of the neutral force.

Mizoram chief secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said that their forces were being withdrawn from the disputed site. “We are going to maintain peace,” he said after the meeting.
