Assault On 2 Girls: Cong Delegation Meets Governor Seeking Action Against Accused

Bhubaneswar: Members of Odisha Congress Pradesh Committee (OPCC) on Tuesday met Governor Satya Pal Mallik and sought his intervention in the alleged assault on a girl and her sister by Nayapalli police.

The matter came to the light after a video featuring the girl, revealing injuries, went viral.

The party delegation accompanied by the victims submitted a memorandum to the Governor and demanded immediate suspension of erring police personnel.

On Monday, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) had asked Director General of Police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and submit the report within a week.

On Saturday night, the inspector-in-charge of the police station concerned, Sangram Patnaik, was transferred to Reserve Police.

Two women sub-inspectors, Minati Nayak and Sasmita Dhal, were also shifted.

On the other hand, Umakant Pradhan was given charge as the IIC of Nayapalli police station. Pradhan was serving as the additional IIC of Capital Police Station here.

The transfers were done following a directive from the DGP.

However, the officers of Nayapalli police station had refuted the allegation levelled against them.

According to police, a team of Nayapalli police had gone to Behera Sahi after receiving a complaint about a clash between two families over a property dispute on May 6. Two woman constables were also injured while pacifying the agitated families. The accused, including the complainants, were arrested and forwarded to court.

The injury marks on the body of the girls, who were later released on bail, might be the result of the violent clash, police had claimed.
