Cuttack: The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of the SCB Medical College and Hospital has urged the Odisha government for exemplary action against the attendee, who bit off the ear of a resident doctor of the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur the previous day.
“We the RDA, SCB MCH strongly condemn the acts of violence against the resident doctor at MKCG Medical College. We urge the state government to make provision for a separate law for such incidents and invoke NSA against the perpetrators,” RDA president Harmohan Barik said in a letter to the president of the Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) of the MKCG.
While the world is going through an unprecedented pandemic, which has brought to the fore the importance of healthcare workers in maintaining health and wellness, this ghastly and heinous act of violence sets a very bad example of intolerance to the medical fraternity. “The RDA of the SCB stands in solidarity with the doctors of MKCG,” he pointed out.

The IIC of Baidyanathpur Police Station Sarada Prasanna Das had earlier told the media that the accused Tarini Prasad Mahapatra (brother of a former Berhampur MP) had admitted his pregnant wife to the Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G) department of MKCG around 9 am on Sunday. Tarini tried to barge into the labour room, where his wife was being taken by the nurses for delivery. He, however, was stopped by Dr Sakil Khan and this led to a scuffle. Tarini attacked the doctors there and bit the ear of Dr Khan.
A profusely bleeding Dr Khan was immediately rushed for treatment.
His colleague Dr Smruti Ranjan Patnaik, who was also on duty in the ward, lodged a complaint with Baidyanathpur police, stating that Tarini forcibly entered the O&G department even though his relatives were already inside.
Acting on the complaint, police arrested Tarini.
Following information, Sadar SDPO Bishnu Prasad Pati rushed to the hospital and brought the situation under control after a meeting with the agitating doctors.
