New Delhi: Was Congress president Rahul Gandhi an assassin’s target when he visited Amethi parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday to file his nomination papers?
Video footage showing a laser aimed at his head while he was interacting with mediapersons has sent shivers down the Congress establishment’s spine.
The home ministry said they had consulted the director of the SPG, who said the light was from a cellphone.
This light was pointed “intermittently on at least 7 separate occasions in a short period; including twice at his temple on the right side of the head,” read a letter the Congress party sent to the home ministry, some media reports said. It was signed by senior Congress leaders such as Ahmed Patel, Randeep Surjewala and Jairam Ramesh.
The ministry, however, denied receiving any letter. But they said the SPG chief, after going through the video clipping, remarked that the matter had “no security implication whatsoever”.
The “green light” shown in the clipping was found to be that of a cellphone used by the AICC photographer, who was videographing the impromptu press interaction of Rahul Gandhi near the collectorate in Amethi.
Director (SPG) also informed MHA that this position was conveyed to Rahul Gandhi’s personal staff, the ministry spokesperson said.
