Bhubaneswar: In order to promote the talent of Odisha players, former captain of Indian cricket team Mohammad Azharuddin plans to open a cricket academy in Bhubaneswar and train them.
Azharuddin has already held discussion with Sports secretary of the state about his plans and sought a piece of government land at a suitable place for the purpose.
Citing the reasons for not many players finding place in national team, the stylish batsman said it is not that Odisha does not talented cricketers. “Lack of exposure and proper grooming have deprived them of making it to Indian cricket. That’s why I want to open the academy so that they can get trained by me as well as international players,” he said while speaking to a local TV channel during a visit to Bhubaneswar.
“The youths in rural areas have tremendous potential. But their talent remains unexplored as they do not get the scope like their counterparts in urban areas to prove themselves. If they are trained, they can ensure their place in Team India,” said Azharuddin.
He further said if the state government provides land, he will establish a cricket academy and train the boys.
He also visited Kalinga Stadium and appreciated its infrastructure. He praised the state government for its contribution in raising the standards of hockey.
Last year, the ace cricketer had visited the site of a proposed cricket academy in Khurda on the invitation of Utkal Gourav Foundation. At that time, he had also said Odisha has failed to groom national level players as it has not given more emphasis on training at the grassroots level.
