Back-To-Back Earthquakes Rock Manipur Within An Hour

Imphal: People of Manipur can’t be blamed for feeling cursed.

Struggling to cope with violent ethnic clashes since May 2023, which ultimately led to the resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh and imposition of President’s rule last month, the northeastern state was on Wednesday shaken up by back-to-back earthquakes.

Two tremors measuring 5.7 and 4.1 on the Richter scale struck Manipur within an hour on Wednesday, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Manipur centre.

There have been no reports of any serious damage yet.

The first earthquake was felt at around 11.05 am, and the second at 12.20 pm.

IMD identified the epicentre of both earthquakes at Kamjong district, which borders Myanmar.

“Earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred on 05-03-2025, 12:20:43 IST, Lat: 24.70 & Long: 94.34, Depth: 66 km, Location: Bishnupur, Manipur, India,” National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Ministry of Earth Sciences, posted on X.

“We felt the first earthquake in our office,” said

Central government officials said they felt the tremor near Imphal airport.

Earlier in the day, two earthquakes were reported in Myanmar. According to NCS, the first earthquake of magnitude 4.7 struck at 3.36 am, followed by one of magnitude 4.5 at 3.54 am.
