Jajpur: Police in Odisha’s Jajpur district exhumed the body of a 19-year-old newlywed woman from the backyard of her in-laws’ house, following allegations of murder, officials said on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Pramila Das, had married 24-year-old Ranjan Kumar Das of Dandasana village under Jenapur police limits just two months ago. Her family alleged that she had endured repeated domestic violence since the marriage.
According to police, Pramila died on Friday. Her
in-laws allegedly buried her body in the backyard of their house without informing her parental family or police. The incident came to light after Pramila’s father lodged a complaint at Jenapur police station, demanding a thorough investigation into his daughter’s death, following an anonymous tip-off on Sunday.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, police teams reached the village and exhumed the body. “We have sent the exhumed body for postmortem and are awaiting the report to ascertain the exact cause of death. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Jenapur police station IIC Nirupama Jena told the media.
Initial probes suggest an argument between the couple preceded her death. Pramila’s husband, Ranjan Kumar Das, has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody after a local court rejected his bail plea.
