Pune: A 17-year-old, who crashed a sports car killing a couple on a motorbike, was granted bail by a juvenile court within 14 hours of the deadly collision here on Sunday.

Among bail conditions set by the Juvenile Justice Board in Pune was a 300-word essay on the ‘effect of road accidents and their solution’.

Other conditions set for the minor’s release:

* Working alongside traffic police for 15 days.

* Undergoing psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

* Seeking rehabilitation at a de-addiction centre.

* Studying traffic rules and giving a presentation on the same to the Juvenile Justice Board.

* Assisting accident victims in the future, if he witnesses one.

The teenager is the son of a prominent real estate developer. The identity of the boy or his father wasn’t revealed by police.

He rammed the Porsche into a motorbike carrying Anis Dudhiya and Ashwini Costa around 2.45 am. According to the police FIR, Costa died on the spot, while Dudhiya succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

A video which surfaced online showed the teenager being thrashed by a crowd at the accident scene. India Today quoted an eyewitness as saying that there were three people in the Porsche, all of whom were drunk. One of the trio fled the scene following the collision.

Following his detention, the minor driver was produced before the juvenile court. Police wanted the driver to be tried as an adult, but JJB did not accept the plea and granted conditional bail.

Pune City Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar informed that a case was registered against the teenager and the pub that served liquor to the minor.

The Porsche that was involved in the accident was registered in the name of the minor’s father, but there was no number plate.

“We registered a case under Section 304 (causing the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Since he was a minor, an application was made to the court that the minor should be tried as an adult. The court rejected the permission,” he said.

Kumar said police would appeal against the order in the district court, and action will be taken as per the court order.

“A separate case has been registered against the father of the minor and the person who gave him liquor. The minor had consumed alcohol. The CCTV footage has become clear,” Kumar said.

“The car was registered in his father’s name. We are investigating why there was no number plate and for how long the temporary number plate was there,” he added.
