Balasore Woman Gets Triple Talaq As ‘Eidi

Balasore: Two weeks after Parliament passed the triple talaq bill, criminalizing the instant divorce practice in Muslim community, a woman of Soro in Odisha’s Balasore district on Tuesday approached the district collector, claiming that her husband divorced her by pronouncing ‘talaq’ thrice on Eid-Al-Adha the previous day.

The woman, who had tied the knot with one Karim Khan of Pathana Mohala in Soro area, further alleged that she was tortured by her husband and in-laws.

According to sources, Karim uttered talaq thrice when the woman asked him for Eidi (money given on Eid) at his shop. He also verbally abused her.

The woman alleged that she was deprived of basic amenities and that her brother used to bring her meals.

Acting on her complaint, the collector has ordered a probe into the matter, the sources added.
