Baragada: In a significant development ahead of the 2026-27 edition of the globally-renowned Bargarh Dhanu Yatra, actor Sushil Meher has stepped aside from playing the role of Maharaj Kans.
Meher, who was selected to portray the mythological demon king Kans for the previous edition of Dhanu Yatra, has written to Bargarh Collector and Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti president Aditya Goyal seeking a one-year break.
Meher stated that he would be willing to return to the arena in future if the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti gives him another opportunity.
The actor’s decision to step aside was taken after controversies over his performance caused him mental distress. He alleged that the controversy had been created by vested interest groups.
An actor selected to play Kans is expected to continue in the role for three years, as per existing practice. However, Meher’s performance during the 2025-26 edition led to criticism and controversy.
At the recent meeting of the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti, several committees reportedly raised the demand to replace Meher. The Samiti had asked him to communicate his decision within 15 days.
Meher submitted his request to take a break from the 2026-27 edition before the deadline ended.
Discussions have started over who will portray Kans in the upcoming Dhanu Yatra, scheduled to be held from January 12 to 22, 2027.
It remains to be seen whether the Samiti will conduct a fresh selection, or choose one of the performers who featured in the top five during last year’s Kans selection process.
