Bhubaneswar: A youth has been nabbed from a hotel here by the Special Squad of Commissionerate Police for duping jewellers.
He has been identified as Vishal Lilenga of Bengaluru, an MBA student.
According to police, he was nabbed from a 5 star hotel in Bhubaneswar. He used to send fake money debit messages to jewellers on mobile phone thus defrauding them of lakhs of rupees.
As per the investigation, Vishal introduced himself as an Income Tax Officer and purchased gold ornaments from various jewellery shops in the state. To make payments, Vishal used the UPI option. The money never got delivered as he used display a fake money debit message on his mobile phone to deceive the seller.
The jewellers in Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Puri districts had complained of such fraud and police was on the lookout for him, sources said.
He was handed over to Sambalpur police and investigation is on.
