Bengaluru: Bengaluru police have cracked the murder case of an Odisha woman whose body was found early this month at a vacant plot in MS Nagar Agrahara Layout.
A government rule requiring vacant sites to be cleaned helped Sampigehalli police solve the case, police said on Saturday.
The accused, identified as 32-year-old Sagar Chandra Rawat, was arrested several weeks after allegedly killing his wife.
Sagar and his wife Anusuya, 28, both from Odisha, worked in different hotels in Bengaluru.
According to police, the couple had a heated argument over a financial issue on August 11. It got out of hand and Sagar allegedly strangled Anusuya to death. He stayed in their house with her body for three days before wrapping it in a mattress and dumping it at a vacant site.
The body was discovered in a terrible state, partially eaten by stray dogs, by sanitation workers who were sent to the site by the owner to clean the plot on September 2.
They noticed a mattress tied with ropes. A foul smell prompted them to alert police. On opening the mattress, cops found the decomposed body.
It was initially difficult to identify the victim. A clothing tag bearing the name of a mall was found on the body.
Using the tag details and the associated bill, police traced the victim’s identity.
Following the investigation, police arrested Rawat nearly 20 days after the murder. The probe is ongoing.
