Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police has summoned BJP president JP Nadda and IT Cell chief Amit Malviya over an ‘objectionable post’ by party’s Karnataka unit.
A notice, issued by the Investigating Officer of High Grounds police station on Wednesday, has given the BJP leaders a week’s time to appear before them.
The controversial post contained a video showing Congress party favouring Muslims for reservation at the cost of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes — an allegation made by top BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past few days.
An FIR was registered against Nadda, Malviya and BJP’s Karnataka unit chief B Y Vijayendra for posting the video.
Karnataka’s chief electoral officer stated that the post violated legal framework and asked the party to take down the post.
When that wasn’t complied with, Election Commission of India (ECI) sent a notice to X to remove it.
“An FIR has already been registered in the matter. It is further brought to your notice that Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka through Cyber Crime Division, Bengaluru has already directed X on 05.05.2024 to take down the objectionable post as per Section 79(3)(b) of Information Technology Act and rule 3(1)(d) of The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. However, the post has not been taken down yet,” ECI said in its notice to X.
