Better Late Than Never: BCCI Frames Sexual Harassment Policy, Kohli & Co. Under Its Purview

New Delhi: At a time when most companies and organizations have already put a robust sexual harassment policy in place mandatorily, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) strangely didn’t have a specific policy to deal with such matters.

On Monday, BCCI finally ratified a comprehensive Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) policy which will bring Team India cricketers under its purview.

Besides all players from senior to under-16 level, the policy will also be applicable to BCCI office-bearers, Apex Council members and IPL Governing Council members, reported PTI.

According to the report, a four-member Internal Committee (IC) will be formed to investigate any sexual harassment complaint.

Though the name of members wasn’t disclosed during BCCI’s Apex Council meeting on Monday, the policy states that the presiding officer of the IC “shall be a woman employed at a senior level at the Workplace.”

Further, two members of the IC will be selected “from among the employees, preferably who are committed to the cause of women or have experience in social work or have legal knowledge.”

One member of the IC will be selected from “a Non-Governmental Organization or association committed to the cause of women or a person familiar with issues relating to sexual harassment”.

Most importantly, at least half of the members of IC will be women.
