New Delhi: Doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, have said that the separated conjoined twins, Jaga-Kalia, now need nursing care and arrangement for the same can be made in Odisha.
“This is a collective decision of AIIMS doctors as the twins are well on the road to recovery and need special nursing care, more than the services of specialized doctors,” said Dr Ashok Mohapatra, former head of the Neurosurgery Department of AIIMS-New Delhi.
In Jaga’s case, five percent of the skin on his skull remains to be healed, while Kalia’s recovery is almost 99 percent, he said.
“In my opinion, Jaga can be taken to his native village in Kandhamal district. Considering the condition of Kalia, he should be kept under care in the hospital for another month or two. We doctors feel that being close to home and family will expedite the recovery of the twins,” he pointed out.
However, it is going to be a long process, he said.
“It has been exactly four months since the conjoined twins were operated on and they have made rapid recovery. The twins have spent nearly eight months at AIIMS and I think it’s time they are brought back home for nursing care,” he observed.
On February 22, the AIIMS doctors had fitted a special helmet on Jaga’s head to protect his skull. Another helmet for Kalia will be designed very soon. The doctors had advised special helmets for the twins as their skull has not healed completely. There is every possibility of infection in the operated area of the skull if not covered properly, they had pointed out.
