Bhubaneswar: A 46 year-old advocate died after allegedly setting himself on fire atop his four-storey house at Pandara under Mancheswar police limits in Bhubaneswar late on Thursday.
According to sources, the deceased was reportedly undergoing treatment for a psychiatric condition. He locked himself in his home’s staircase room and set himself on fire using an inflammable substance.
His wife went upstairs at around 10.30 pm to ask him for dinner and raised an alarm on finding smoke emanating from the locked room. Hearing her screams, some youths in the neighbourhood climbed onto the roof from an adjoining house and found him engulfed in flames. He died on the spot.
No suicide note was found explaining his reasons for taking his life.
On receiving the information, police recovered his half-burnt body and sent it to Capital Hospital for a postmortem. “Preliminary probe suggests no foul play. There are no allegations of abetment of suicide too. A scientific team will visit the deceased’s house to investigate the matter,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena.
The deceased is survived by his wife, two children, and mother.
