Odisha’s Suvash Satapathy Wins Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize 2024

Bhubaneswar: Odia translator and journalist Suvash Satapathy will receive the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Akademi Prize for translation for the year 2024.

He will be conferred with the award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to literature through the translation of eminent writer Ruskin Bond’s autobiography, ‘Lone Fox Dancing’, into Odia language, entitled ‘Kokishialira Ekaka Nrutya’, the Akademi announced on Friday.

The prize carries a cash reward of Rs50,000 and a copper plaque, which will be presented to the 21 awardees later this year.

The panel responsible for adjudicating submissions in the Odia translation category this year consisted of poet Amaresh Pattnaik, alongside esteemed literary figures Pravasini Mahakud and Monalisa Jena.

The official release further mentioned that awards for Nepali and Sanskrit languages will be declared later. There will be no award for the Urdu language this year, it added.

Satpathy, who did his post graduation in English from Utkal University in 1983, was conferred with Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014. ‘Samsmar’, ‘Purnima Ratrira Abhisara and Anyanya Galpa’, ‘Samudra Kulara Gaon’, Khushwant Singh’s short story collection, M T Vasudevan Nair’s short story collection, Ashoka Mitran’s short story collection, ‘Dosamali’ and ‘Bibhajan’ are among his notable translations  He has also translated four volumes of ‘Complete Works of B R Ambedkar’. His other works include biographies of politician Harekrushana Mahtab, Nityananda Kanungo and Lachit Barphukan.
