In a bid to reduce plastic pollution in Odisha capital, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) are collectively campaigning to promote ‘Green Gifts’ this new year.
The BMC has urged the city denizens to exchange gifts that biodegradable or recyclable.
Plants, books and souvenirs representing local art and crafts are being encouraged by the municipal body, besides gifts having no plastic wrapping.
“As a cultural practice of gifting things during the festive season, always try to gift items which will have least burden on our urban environment. It is largely seen that during festivities people tend to exchange loads of gifts, which finally create a lot of non-biodegradable waste burden in the city. Thus we appeal all to come up with innovative ideas and gift plants, books and souvenirs representing local art and crafts etc so that there will be no need of plastic materials to pack them and ultimately generate minimal or zero waste,” BMC said in its ‘Go Green’ appeal.
